Past

Founded in 1986 under the original name of the “Heebe Jeebe's”, the club officially latched onto its definition: “...a collection of wild animals on display,” changing to Minneapolis Menagerie Rugby Club in 1989. Our team colors are purple, black, and white.

Menagerie's current membership includes: 30 players and 50+ social members. Active players comprised of single and married women ages 20-55, career women in the Health & Law fields, manufacturing, engineering, management, education, business and the military. This diverse group of women makes a yearlong commitment to play high quality rugby, strengthen women's rugby in Minnesota, and have fun!

Along with rugby, community support and service have always been an active part of the Minneapolis Menagerie RFC vision. Menagerie supports the "Adopt a Highway" cleanup program, the Eastside Neighborhood Services Food Shelf, local hospitals and schools. Annually, the team hosts fundraisers in honor of our fallen mate, Pippi or volunteers for:

  • Pippi's Book Cart: book drive for local hospitals...
  • Eastside Neighborhood Service: food shelf fundraiser...
  • School Supplies Drive: schools supplies to various local schools...
  • Northeast Parade: volunteer community service...

We are also a big supporter of the Finnegan's Community Fund, a Twin Cities non-profit organization benefitting the underprivileged and working poor.

Team members participate in numerous events to raise money and/or awareness for community issues (*see the right side bar!) Menagerie members also coach and referee high school rugby and volunteer in other nationally recognized organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the YWCA/YMCA.

In the spirit of giving we recently implemented an annual scholarship for a selected area high school female rugby player who meets preset criteria including the continuation of her rugby career through college.

Present

Fall of 2006 brought Menagerie into the Midwest Division II Playoffs, earning a respectable 2nd place finish and the right to advance to the Division II National Championship in Raleigh, NC. At Nationals, Menagerie beat NOVA (first round), only to be followed by a tough loss to the Venom (our Hosts). Sunday brought a well-deserved victory over Pittsburgh, to earn a 3rd Place finish in the Division II National Championships.

Future

Currently we are working hard at preserving our place at the top of our division; culminating in the ultimate goal of winning the Division II National Title.
